About my photography

I am a travel and fine-art photographer based in Oxford, England. I have lived and worked in many parts of the world with many years in the US, and I have a special connection to Japan.

I capture images using a variety of techniques and processes, including digital, film and manipulated Polaroids

A little history and background to my images.....

After a short hiatus, I have created the onephoto site as the focal point for my images. After many years in Houston, we have moved to the UK and now live in the countryside close to the city of Oxford. My time in the US was a wonderful experience and shaped my photographic style. Houston is a great city for anyone who appreciates contemporary art - from individual galleries to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Center for Photography. It is also home to Fotofest, the biannual event that brings photographers together from around the world for exhibitions and portfolio reviews. I was fortunate to participate in several Fotofest events and benefitted enormously from the portfolio reviews I had, from gallery owners, collectors, museums and artists. Perhaps the biggest influence on my work was the exposure to contemporary and conceptual art and the opportunity to listen to and interact with contemporary artists. This contact directly led to my Iraq Live project which started while taking a class with Peter Brown at the Rice Unversity school of continuing studies.

One of my favourite places to spend time in the US was Santa Fe in New Mexico. In addition to great art, atmosphere and restaurants, Santa Fe is home to the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. The two workshops I took in Santa Fe - Polaroid Imagery with John Reuter, and Stock Photography with Patrick Donehue both had a huge impact on my photographic style and my image creating process. I have used Polaroid film a great deal in my photography - both as final images and also to scan and print at large scale. The scanned and printed Polaroids take on a different character when printed at large scale on watercolour paper. This discovery led to my limited edition prints in the Urban Abstracts and Earth Kyoto series which were exhibited in Houston and also acquired in two corporate art collections. I must thank Kinlzelman Art Consulting for their part in promoting my work.

After Polaroid film became difficult to obtain, I started to experiment with in-camera techniques in my digital Nikon to see how effects could be created that were similar to the ones I had made using Polaroid film. The series of images taken in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Miyajima Island (close to Hiroshima) were the result of these experiments and I like the abstract and dreamy images that were created this way.

I have also enjoyed photography as part of travel, and in many cases the photography became the reason to travel. I spent two years in Cairo and have lived or traveled in a variety of other countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Peru. I had many images published in photographic and travel magazines and for a while worked through a small boutique stock agency. Perhaps the best travel photographic experience were two trips to Cuba along with other photographers organised by the Maine Photographic Workshops. I really enjoyed the ability to interact with people in Cuba and the photographic opportunities were endless.

Exhibitions

I am always interested in showing my work. Not only for the satisfaction of seeing my work exhibited, but also for the social contact and opportunity to share my passion for art and images with others. Many of the images shown on this website take on new character when printed large scale and are best viewed as exhibition prints.

The image shown here was taken from an exhibition opening for a show that included my Iraq Live project at the Houston Center for Photography.
